PERIODONTAL DISEASES ARE INFLAMMATORY DISEASES, OF INFECTIOUS ORIGIN, MULTI FACTORIAL (MULTIPLE CAUSES), CHARACTERIZED BY A RUPTURE OF THE BALANCE OF THE ORAL FLORA.
These multiple causes can be: diseases (diabetes), stress, anxiety, hormonal deregulation, tobacco, inadequate oral hygiene, etc.
This disruption of the natural balance "good bacteria / bad bacteria" is going to be at the origin of the inflammatory manifestations: redness, pain and bleeding of the gums, even mobility of the teeth.
Thus periodontal diseases are established: gingivitis (involvement of the gums), and periodontists (involvement of the supporting tissues of the tooth: bones, alveolar ligament and cementum). Then appears what is called a "periodontal pocket".
These two diseases are then classified into several subcategories.
