Ear Surgery

The folds on it make the auricle three-dimensional. These folds are formed in the mother's womb, grow in accordance with the development after birth and reach adult sizes by the age of 5-6. It is one of the aesthetic operations that can be done in childhood. Increasing the angle of the ear with the head is called prominent ear. This increase in angle mainly occurs due to 2 reasons: 1) insufficiency of the fold between cartilages (Antihelical fold insufficiency) 2) excessive development of the pit in the ear (Conchal Hypertrophy). Sometimes the same patient has both reasons. It may be unilateral prominent ear deformity, but it is usually bilateral. The ears are perceived as larger than normal due to the eye error that develops due to the absence of fold.

Ear development should be completed for prominent ear correction. It can be done after 5-6 years old. The criticism of children, the desire to move around by covering their ears constantly, can cause psychological damage to children with prominent ears. For this reason, it is appropriate to perform the operation before primary school age. While it is possible to perform the operation in adults with only the anesthesia of the ear area (local anesthesia), it is performed by being completely anesthetized (general anesthesia) in children. Patients who are operated under local anesthesia can be taken home from the hospital on the same day. In the prominent ear operation, it is aimed to create folds in the ear and to reduce the pitting. Abnormally developed cartilages are reached with the incision made behind the ear. Although many surgical techniques have been described, thinning of the cartilage from the place where it will fold, creating folds with stitches, removing excess cartilage, and using soft tissue flaps to prevent reopening of the ear are the methods used. The operation takes approximately 45-60 minutes for each ear and closed dressing is applied 1-2 days after the operation. The stitch at the incision site is removed 1 week after the operation. The incision scar hidden behind the ear does not create a disturbing scar after surgery. In order to support the newly created folds, it is recommended to use an elastic forehead band in the first 2 months after surgery.

Prominent ear surgery prevents mental traumas that may occur in adults and children, and in adult patients, especially female patients can easily collect their hair by increasing their self-confidence after surgery.

Other aesthetic procedures to be performed in the ear area are the correction of acquired tumors, traumas and deformities due to the earring. In non-standard ear deformities, the necessary surgery is planned considering the missing structure.
